Phishing emails are becoming increasingly common. In these emails, cybercriminals pretend to be a trustworthy organization, such as a bank, parcel delivery service, or online shop. Their goal is to steal your personal information, passwords, or banking details — or to trick you into making a payment to the wrong bank account.
Below are five tips to help you recognize a phishing email.
1. An urgent message The email often tries to pressure you with messages such as:“Your account will be blocked” or “Confirm your details immediately.”
2. Suspicious email address Always check the sender’s email address. Sometimes the company name looks correct, but the email address itself is strange or illogical.
3. Unexpected link Many phishing emails contain a link you are asked to click. Move your mouse over the link to see where it actually leads. Often it points to an unknown website.
4. Request for personal information Reliable organizations almost never ask for passwords, PIN codes, or other sensitive information via email.
5. Spelling mistakes or unusual sentences Although phishing emails are becoming more sophisticated, they may still contain noticeable language or spelling mistakes.
What should you do if you receive a phishing email?
Do you think you have received a phishing email? Take the following steps:
Do not click on any links
Do not open attachments
Check the sender’s email address
Delete the email
If you are unsure whether a message is genuine, go directly to the company’s website by typing the web address manually into your browser.
Did you click on a link anyway? Phishing emails are becoming increasingly sophisticated, but by staying alert you can prevent many problems. If you are unsure about an email or want to clean up your system after clicking on a phishing link:
