USB-C mandatory for laptops: What does this mean for you?

Starting from April 28, 2026, significant changes will be introduced in the European Union that will affect the way laptops are charged. What was already the case for smartphones, tablets, and other smaller devices will apply to laptops from that date: USB-C will become the new standard for charging. What does this mean for businesses, retailers, and consumers?
What is Changing Exactly?
The new EU rules establish two key obligations for new laptops that will be launched in the European market from April 28, 2026:
USB-C Charging Required
Every new laptop must be chargeable via USB-C. While other charging ports may still be present, the manufacturer must include a second charging port with USB-C. In practice, it is expected that manufacturers will fully switch to USB-C, as it is the future-proof choice. This provides convenience for consumers: one charger for all your devices.
Laptop Sold Without a Charger
Manufacturers must offer consumers the option to purchase a laptop without a charger. This does not mean that every laptop will automatically come without a charger, but the option must be available. Since it is commercially impractical to offer two versions of the same product, most laptops will likely be sold without a charger in the box.
Why this change?
The EU has introduced these measures with the aim of reducing waste and increasing convenience for consumers. The idea is to decrease the number of unused chargers. By mandating USB-C as the universal standard, consumers will no longer need to purchase a new charger when buying a new device, which is both cost-saving and more environmentally friendly.
How do you know which charger you need?
From the specified date, manufacturers must place a standardized label on every new laptop. This label will display two important numbers:
Lighter laptops (up to 65W power)
Heavier laptops (up to 100W power)
Chargers of 65W and 100W can cover most of the market. However, keep in mind that gaming laptops and other heavy-duty machines often require more power. These laptops may need up to 240W, which is currently hard to find in the USB-C charger market. Manufacturers are working on solutions for these high-power models.
Conclusion
The transition to USB-C charging for laptops is an important step toward reducing waste and offering greater convenience for consumers. However, you should also be aware that when purchasing a new phone or laptop, a charger may not be included. Don't forget to buy one if you don’t have one already. When you purchase a phone or laptop from BudgetFix, we already take this into account.
